Machine (CNC) Operator

Purpose / Summary:

OPERATES MACHINES  to produce or shape aluminum die castings to specifications.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

With direct supervision available, using programmed instructions, set up sheets, blue prints and in accordance with standard shop practices, operate CNC machines to perform a sequence of operations such as turn, mill, drill, tap, bore, ream, and countersink a variety of parts. Occasionally assist in modification of set up when tooling is not available to assure machining within required specifications.

Reviews setup sheet and specifications to determine setup procedure, machining sequence, and dimensions of finished workpiece.

Use simple hand tools and assortment of holding fixtures (supplied by company). Hand tools include wrenches, hex keys, hand drills, impact drivers, small rubber mallets, copper or lead headed hammers, files, and blades for deburring.

Manipulates controls and enters commands to index cutting tool to specified set point and to start machine.

Observes and listens to machine operation to detect malfunctions such as worn or damaged cutting tools.

Operate more than one machine as internal time permits. (Internal time is the time during which a machine is cycling or operating without direct attention of the operator which allows other duties to be performed).

Responsible for finished parts conformity to print or specifications. Measures workpiece for conformance to specifications. Using variety of precision measuring instruments such as a scale, calipers, plug, ring, snap, air, bore and dial indicator gauges, micrometer and surface analyzer.

Changes inserts to machine parts according to specifications when they become dull or broken.

Compile daily log of all machine malfunctions and operations. Notifies supervisor of discrepancies.

Ability to keep track of daily production and enter information into our job costing system. Accurately tag various containers of product.

Assist in routine cleaning and daily maintenance of machines.

This job has no supervisory responsibilities. 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or combination of education and experience as deemed acceptable by the hiring authority. 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information to one-on-one and small group and other employees of the organization. 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

WAGE RANGE

The starting pay for this position wll range between $12.50 to $19.25 per hour with shift differential pay available for evening and overnight shifts.
